The Blogging Gorilla

Is this the blogging gorilla?
Let’s be honest. If you’ve followed the TGG Blog for any period of time, you know it has seen it’s share of high and low activity. Coming off a season of high activity (13 posts in the last 12 weeks by 10 different authors) I thought I would share some of the ideas we’ve recently implemented to help make blogging easier for us. Hopefully these can help you and your organization tackle what sometimes feels like the 300lb blogging gorilla.

We got refocusized

Writing a blog post just to write one is silly, but communicating with people in the financial industry, now that’s something we are obviously into. This blog is a way for us to do that in a very casual way and honestly makes the actual writing come much easier.

We got schedulized

Setting a blogging schedule was actually really easy. Lisa sent out a message with everyone’s name on and an assigned due date. Looking at a schedule and seeing that each of us only had to write a post every 10 weeks sure made “maintaining and contributing to the blog” seem like a piece of cake.

We got pressurized

After the schedule and deadlines were set, accountability manifested itself in straight up middle school peer pressure. Instead of relying on some system of rewards and reprimands by “management”, it was quickly apparent that if you did not get your article done you were going to get a nudge from Lisa, Brad, and anyone else you came across. In fact, here’s the email I just got from Lisa:

Hey, you haven’t posted your blog yet! :(

It’s incredible how motivating a “sad face” can be. Even beyond that, with all the other (very very busy) members of the team contributing the “I’m too busy” claim has become a weak (and dangerous) defense.

And that’s it! It’s amazing that a few simple changes in process (and not technology) have taken our blog from “hit or miss” to “always on” in just a few short months. I hope have enjoyed reading our recent additions and are as excited as we are about the content to come!
